PMR446 equipment is licence free, and therefore anyone can use it. It has become popular in recent years for short distance communication by both business users, and also members of the public.
Analogue PMR446 was the original standard, and offers 8 separate channels, with a number of privacy codes that can make the channel seem private, by screening out unwanted calls.
