Analogue FM (frequency modulation) is the traditional radio standard that has powered professional two-way communications for decades. Unlike digital radio, analogue FM transmits voice as a continuous electrical signal.
When analogue FM is still the right choice
Analogue FM remains practical where simplicity, cost and compatibility with existing infrastructure matter more than digital features. Analogue degrades gracefully — as signal weakens, audio gets noisier rather than cutting out, which matters in safety-critical environments.
Analogue vs digital radio
The main advantages of digital (DMR, NXDN, P25) over analogue FM are improved audio clarity, better spectral efficiency, encryption, and digital features like GPS tracking. Most modern radio programmes migrate to digital over time — but the transition must be managed to avoid leaving users without communications during the changeover.
