Manufacturing and Industry is currently going through a new industrial revolution, in which processes are being automated.

Data Gathering

All industrial systems have three component blocks, these are:

Input-Process_output

Data gathering comes under the ‘Input’ block  part of the industrial automation process.

Sensors gather data and measure machine parameters,  such as the phase current being drawn by an Induction Motor.

This data is valuable in machine ‘decision making’ , as it provides information on whether the motor is running, and whether there is a fault condition (such as a ‘single Phasing’ fault).

The data being gathered by sensors needs to be moved into the Cloud, so that it can be analysed and processed.

Both wired and wireless transmission methods can be used to achieve this, however wireless is usually more convenient, and cheaper to implement.

Methods of wireless data transmission from the sensors (known as sensor nodes),  can be achieved using transmission technologies such as Bluetooth, Wifi Zigbee, 4G, 5G, and Lorawan.

The type of wireless transmission technology used, is tailored to the working environment, signal range, and data rate required.

The wireless (or wired) data is received by a ‘Gateway’ device, which receives the wireless data, and puts it onto the Internet Cloud.

Process

The Process part of the three component blocks of an industrial automation system, is responsible for sorting, analysing, and even making automated decisions.

The process section of  an industrial automation system usually takes place in the Internet Cloud, though locally hosted servers (in premises) can also be used.

The cloud is where Industry 4.0 really comes alive, as artificial intelligence software can analyse the machine data, and make automated decisions.

Output

Using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning based in the Cloud, automated industrial control and process decisions can be made.

Internet Of Things Consultancy & Solutions: M2M: Connection of machine & environmental monitoring sensors to the Internet, via wireless integration, known as Internet Of Things / IOT.  Technologies including Sigfox, GSM, The Things Network (LoraWan), WIFI, Bluetooth, Zigbee etc.

What is the Internet of Things

IOT, which is short for the Internet of Things uses remote wireless sensors to monitor data from wide range of sensors. The data could be the level of snow on a mountain, or traffic levels on certain roads in a city.

Yesway Ltd is mainly  focused is on LoraWAN, which is a Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless communication technology.

LoraWAN is a narrowband technology, and allows you to transfer small amounts of data wirelessly from a sensor placed in a location, such as a field or road, to the Internet (via a ‘Gateway’ Device).

The Internet of Things (IOT) can of course use other ways of transferring collected data top the internet Gateway device.

These include other wireless technologies, such as WIFI & 5G.

Data can also be transferred through physical wires, if the sensors are a close distance to the Internet Gateway device.

IOT Gateway

The function of the Gateway device in the LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) Internet of Things network, is to receive the wireless signals from the sensors.

Once the Gateway device receives the data signal it transfers it to the Internet. This transfer is achieved using methods such as an Ethernet wired connection from or WIFI etc (depending on the Gateway output connections).

A number of manufacturers produce LPWAN Internet-Of-Things Gateways, both in Europe and the USA.

Design Considerations

Some are designed for indoor usage, and some for external mounting outside.

One consideration when purchasing an IOT Gateway is what is known as the IP Rating.

IP stands for Ingress Protection.

The IP Rating states how well a piece of equipment can withstand environmental factors, such as dust and water.

The manufacturers specification will detail the IP Rating for that particular model.

In the project management planning stage for a new Gateway installation, consideration of where the Gateway is to be installed is important.

The manufacturer will state whether the equipment is for indoor or outdoor usage, but this is not enough.

For example an Internet of Things  Gateway that is going to be potentially submerged in water, should have an IP rating of IP67 or IP68, depending on the duration and severity of the potential water immersion.

Another consideration to be made by the IOT Gateway installer is whether the device is going to be located in a coastal location.

Coastal locations, due to the fact that the sea is salty have a potentially corrosive effect on electrical and electronic installations. Sea spray and coastal rain cause this.

Therefore the Gateway needs a high IP Rating, and the case material needs to be able to withstand the environmental conditions. Materials such as sealed plastic cases, and Marine grade stainless steel are suitable.

You may need to protect your Gateway inside a suitable case, as they are not designed to be submerged, for  example.

Encasing a Gateway in a case will have implications for its operational performance.

For example, the Gateway has an antenna on it, to receive the data transmitted by radio waves. By enclosing the Internet of Things Gateway inside another case will ‘Attenuate’ the signal.

Attenuation means that less signal reaches the antenna of the gateway, and therefore the external sensors need to be closer to the Gateway, to work.

The problem of attenuation due to the extra casing can be resolved by fitting an external antenna onto the ‘new’ casing, and connecting it to the Gateway inside. Of course this solution is subject to the Gateway device having an external antenna connection facility.

When fitting an external antenna to a new case, care needs to be taken to ensure that the IP Rating of the new (external) case is not compromised.

Additional fitments to the case, such as the antenna mounting should be of equal IP Rating to the case, to ensure the desired performance against dust and water.

Build up of case pressure is another consideration. If a unit is sealed, there can be pressure build up inside the case, due to altitude changes etc.

This can result the waterproof seals which are between the case lid, and the main part, ‘blowing’.

If the seals become compromised then water and dust ingress can take place, and damage occur.

Pressure build up inside the case also increases the chance of damage to the internal electronic components.

The solution is to fit the case with special pressure relief valves to the case. These can be obtained fairly cheaply, and will prevent the build up of pressure, due to atmospheric and altitude changes.

A number of manufacturers produce LPWAN Internet-Of-Things Gateways, both in Europe and the USA.

Design Considerations

Some are designed for indoor usage, and some for external mounting outside.

One consideration when purchasing an IOT Gateway is what is known as the IP Rating.

IP stands for Ingress Protection.

The IP Rating states how well a piece of equipment can withstand environmental factors, such as dust and water.

The manufacturers specification will detail the IP Rating for that particular model.

In the project management planning stage for a new Gateway installation, consideration of where the Gateway is to be installed is important.

The manufacturer will state whether the equipment is for indoor or outdoor usage, but this is not enough.

For example an Internet of Things  Gateway that is going to be potentially submerged in water, should have an IP rating of IP67 or IP68, depending on the duration and severity of the potential water immersion.

Another consideration to be made by the IOT Gateway installer is whether the device is going to be located in a coastal location.

Coastal locations, due to the fact that the sea is salty have a potentially corrosive effect on electrical and electronic installations. Sea spray and coastal rain cause this.

Therefore the Gateway needs a high IP Rating, and the case material needs to be able to withstand the environmental conditions. Materials such as sealed plastic cases, and Marine grade stainless steel are suitable.

You may need to protect your Gateway inside a suitable case, as they are not designed to be submerged, for  example.

Encasing a Gateway in a case will have implications for its operational performance.

For example, the Gateway has an antenna on it, to receive the data transmitted by radio waves. By enclosing the Internet of Things Gateway inside another case will ‘Attenuate’ the signal.

Attenuation means that less signal reaches the antenna of the gateway, and therefore the external sensors need to be closer to the Gateway, to work.

The problem of attenuation due to the extra casing can be resolved by fitting an external antenna onto the ‘new’ casing, and connecting it to the Gateway inside. Of course this solution is subject to the Gateway device having an external antenna connection facility.

When fitting an external antenna to a new case, care needs to be taken to ensure that the IP Rating of the new (external) case is not compromised.

Additional fitments to the case, such as the antenna mounting should be of equal IP Rating to the case, to ensure the desired performance against dust and water.

Build up of case pressure is another consideration. If a unit is sealed, there can be pressure build up inside the case, due to altitude changes etc.

This can result the waterproof seals which are between the case lid, and the main part, ‘blowing’.

If the seals become compromised then water and dust ingress can take place, and damage occur.

Pressure build up inside the case also increases the chance of damage to the internal electronic components.

The solution is to fit the case with special pressure relief valves to the case. These can be obtained fairly cheaply, and will prevent the build up of pressure, due to atmospheric and altitude changes.

The data from the wireless sensors is send to the internet cloud, via a device called a gateway.

The Internet of Things, or IOT for short connects low power sensors to the Internet.

This allows monitoring of industrial processes, traffic monitoring and smart agriculture.

For example, imagine sensors in the field that monitor the crop moisture and temperature levels, and relay the data wirelessly via a wireless ‘gateway’ device onto the internet.

Once on the internet the data can not only be relayed to the farmer, but also analysed using so called ‘Big data’ , and even automatically control ‘outputs’ such as turning on the water supply, based on the input parameters.

Sensors for the Internet of Things – a guide

Sensors are one of three main components of an Internet of Things, or IOT for short, system.

The first stage in an IOT system, are the sensors, which collect the environmental data.

Using automatic IOT Sensors , not only saves employing staff to manually take readings, but can also be safer in dangerous environments.

Choosing the right  sensors

The type of sensors that you need in order to automate your business operations, not only depends on the processes you wish to monitor, but also the environment that the sensors will be operating in.

Sensors for Damp Environments

Sensors situated in damp environments, whether actually immersed in water, or just located in a damp environment, require appropriate IP.

IP is short for Ingress protection, and is an internationally used rating system for how well a device resists ingress of dust and moisture.

Failure to chose a suitable IP rated sensor can result in premature device failure, causing increased variable maintenance costs for your business. We avoid this by planning a system that is reliable, and meets your business needs.

Sensor types and applications

A sensor is defined as a  Converter that measures a physical quantity and converts it into a signal.

Some examples of sensors that can be integrated by yesway, into your IOT system, are given below.

Airflow

Airflow is the amount of air passing through a pipe, for instance, over a period of time.

Airflow can be measured by a sensing device, which is integrated into a remote wireless node.

The data captured, is wirelessly sent back to an IOT Gateway device, which then sends it into the Internet Cloud.

Current

Current is defined as a flow of electricity which results from the ordered directional movement of electrically charged particles.

Measuring Current can be useful in Industrial Internet Of Things, IIOT environments, such as Smart Factories.

An example of an industrial machine that you may wish to monitor the current of, is the Induction Motor.

An Induction Motor is a type of electrical motor, widely used in factories, and on board ships.

The Induction Motor runs on Alternating Current (AC), and is available as both ‘Single-Phase’, or more typically ‘Three-Phase’ versions.

A Three-Phase Induction Motor has three supply wires (hence the name), which supply electricity along each of the three ‘phase’ wires.

Each Phase is 120 degrees apart, if you were to look at their Sine waves.

Measuring the Current being drawn by the Induction Motor, down each of the three phase wires, can help identify faults with the Induction Motor, or associated control systems.

Force

Pushing or pulling forces can be measured using wireless technology sensing.
