Analogue FM (frequency modulation) is the traditional radio standard that has powered professional two-way communications for decades. Unlike digital radio, analogue FM transmits voice as a continuous electrical signal — what you say is converted directly into a varying radio wave.

How analogue FM works

An analogue FM radio modulates the carrier frequency in proportion to the audio signal. The receiving radio demodulates this signal back into audio. The process is simple, robust and well understood by generations of radio engineers.

When analogue FM is still the right choice

Analogue FM remains a practical choice for many operations — particularly where simplicity, cost and compatibility with existing infrastructure matter more than the additional features of digital. If your team uses a mix of older and newer radios, analogue ensures every radio can hear every other radio. Analogue also degrades gracefully: as signal weakens, audio gets noisier rather than cutting out entirely, which can matter in safety-critical environments.

Analogue vs digital radio

The main advantages of digital (DMR, NXDN, P25) over analogue FM are improved audio clarity, better spectral efficiency, encryption, and digital features like text messaging and GPS tracking. Most modern radio programmes move from analogue to digital over time — but the transition needs to be managed carefully to avoid leaving users without communications.
