dPMR446 is the digital version of the licence-free PMR446 radio service. It uses the dPMR (digital Private Mobile Radio) standard to provide digital audio quality and additional features within the same licence-free 446 MHz band — without requiring an Ofcom licence.

How dPMR446 differs from analogue PMR446

Where analogue PMR446 uses FM modulation across 12.5 kHz channels, dPMR446 uses FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access) with 6.25 kHz channel spacing. This narrower channel allows two digital conversations to occupy the same spectrum as one analogue channel. The digital modulation provides clearer audio at range and adds features like digital squelch, basic encryption and unit-to-unit calling.

dPMR446 practical use cases

dPMR446 suits similar applications to analogue PMR446 — retail, events, hospitality — where a step up in audio quality and basic digital features is useful, but the range and coverage requirements don’t justify a licensed system. The same power and aerial restrictions as analogue PMR446 apply, so range characteristics are similar.

dPMR446 vs DMR

dPMR446 should not be confused with DMR (Digital Mobile Radio), which is the licensed digital standard used in professional radio systems. DMR supports significantly higher power, removable aerials, repeater infrastructure and proper channel licensing — making it suitable for serious operational use. dPMR446 remains a consumer/light-commercial technology.
