The siloed systems problem
A typical commercial or industrial site runs several separate systems: CCTV, access control, a building management system (BMS), a fire and intruder alarm panel, and a radio communications network. Each has its own interface, its own alerts, and its own operator — and they rarely talk to each other.
The consequence is operators context-switching between screens, manually correlating events, and making decisions with incomplete information. In a properly integrated system, correlated events appear in a single interface, the nearest officer is automatically identified by GPS, and the alert is dispatched with a single click.
The integration principle: Every automated alert from a connected system should reach the right person’s radio instantly, with relevant context — what happened, where, and what action is needed. The operator should be the decision-maker, not the information router.
CCTV integration
Modern IP CCTV platforms — Milestone, Genetec, Avigilon — expose APIs that connect to radio dispatch systems. Video Motion Detection zones trigger radio alerts when activity is detected outside business hours. ANPR cameras trigger a radio notification when an unrecognised vehicle enters a site. Video analytics — perimeter crossing, loitering, crowd density — route alerts to specific radio talk groups based on zone and event type.
Access control integration
Forced door alerts trigger an automatic radio alert to the nearest security officer, identified by GPS. Tailgating detection prompts an immediate radio check. Mustering systems cross-reference access control card data with radio GPS positions to identify personnel still inside a building during evacuation, directing radio-equipped fire wardens to those locations.
Building Management System integration
BMS faults and threshold breaches route to maintenance staff radios as structured alerts: “Chiller unit 2, Plant Room B, temperature threshold exceeded — acknowledge receipt.” The engineer acknowledges via radio keypress, logging response time in the BMS. Task completion is confirmed by a further keypress, closing the work order automatically.
