Worldwide Push-to-Talk: How to Run a Single Radio Network Across a Global Workforce

The global operations communications challenge

Organisations operating across multiple countries face a communications problem traditional radio cannot solve. Local radio systems work within their coverage area but provide no connectivity to the wider organisation. Telephone calls and messaging apps connect people but lack the speed, group capability, and operational features that radio provides. The result is typically a patchwork of disconnected local systems, with coordination happening slowly.

Global PoC platforms solve this by treating the worldwide LTE and 5G cellular network as a single radio backplane. Any device, anywhere, connected to any cellular network, can participate in the same talk group as any other device on the platform — regardless of geography.

How global PoC networks work

PoC platforms are cloud-hosted services. Audio from a PTT transmission is encoded, encrypted, and sent from the originating device to a cloud server, which distributes it to all devices subscribed to that talk group. Technical latency is typically under 500 milliseconds end-to-end — imperceptible in push-to-talk usage. Devices connect over whatever data network is available — local 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi, or satellite.

International roaming SIMs: Multi-IMSI or eSIM solutions allow a single SIM to automatically connect to the strongest available local network in each country without standard roaming charges. Specialist providers offer flat-rate global data plans specifically for this use case.

Managing a global radio fleet

Enterprise PoC platforms provide a centralised management portal from which administrators manage every device on the global network from a single interface. Talk group management, individual calling, and dispatcher tools give operations centres visibility of all connected devices, their locations, and communication activity. Role-based access control means regional managers see their region, while global operations directors have worldwide visibility.

Bridging local radio to the global network

Existing local radio infrastructure — DMR repeaters, UHF handhelds — can connect to the global PoC platform via RoIP gateways. A local site radio network appears as a talk group on the global platform. A supervisor in London can join that talk group and speak directly to site radios in another country, even if those radios are conventional DMR handhelds with no cellular capability. This allows migration to happen incrementally rather than requiring a simultaneous fleet replacement.
