Cable Laying Ship Radio Communications Case Study

Offshore Cable-Laying Vessel – Critical Communications Recovery
A cable-laying vessel supporting an offshore wind installation project experienced a complete breakdown in its handheld radio communications system just 24 hours before deployment.
The vessel—chartered by a major UK energy producer—was scheduled to dock at the Port of Sunderland before continuing operations along the UK coast. Reliable communications were essential to coordinate offshore cable installation activities, where delays directly impact project timelines, safety, and cost.
The Challenge
The onboard engineering team had recently procured UHF handheld radios from another supplier. However, the equipment was not functioning effectively in the operational environment.
With deployment imminent, the client was preparing to replace the entire radio fleet at significant cost—without certainty that this would resolve the issue.
Our Approach
We were engaged to provide urgent technical support and independent verification.
Our intervention focused on rapid diagnosis rather than immediate replacement:
- Conducted an on-site RF range survey at the Port of Sunderland using calibrated UHF equipment
- Confirmed that full site coverage was achievable with correctly configured systems
- Performed a detailed analysis of the existing radios’ programming configuration
- Identified that the issue was not a hardware failure, but an incorrect system setup relative to operational requirements
Following confirmation of the client’s licensing parameters, we:
- Re-engineered and standardised the radio configuration across the fleet
- Reprogrammed 20+ handheld units to align with the vessel’s operational workflows
- Delivered and deployed the solution within a constrained same-day turnaround window
Outcome
- Full restoration of reliable communications across the vessel and operational zones
- Avoided unnecessary capital expenditure on replacement equipment
- Enabled the vessel to proceed with offshore operations on schedule
- Reduced operational risk during a critical phase of a renewable energy infrastructure project
The system was fully operational and in use the same evening, supporting time-sensitive offshore activity.
Why This Matters
In offshore renewable operations, communications are safety-critical infrastructure.
Failures are often misdiagnosed as equipment faults—when in reality, they stem from poor system design or configuration.
We specialise in identifying and resolving these issues quickly, ensuring that communications systems are aligned with real-world operational demands.
